Cycladic and contemporary art.
The economic crisis has tended to overshadow Greece's role in laying the foundations of European culture. A role we are reminded of in this lavish exhibition devoted to the Cyclades and their hypnotic idols. These stylised images, symbolic expressions of human power, were created three thousand years before our era. Whatever may have been their function in the ancient world, they have a beauty that has remained pure and timeless: women, violin-shaped or with crossed arms, and trapezoid heads in white marble, polished for eternity. Their forms were adopted by modern artists, from Picasso to Brancusi. So we could not resist the temptation to create a dialogue between this outstanding selection from the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens and the work of renowned international contemporary artists.
